Shake up an apple cider margarita for a festive fall cocktail with bright seasonal flavor, a refreshing finish, and plenty of party appeal!!

An apple cider margarita should taste like a margarita first and an autumn drink second: bright lime, clean tequila, orange perfume, and a rounded apple finish!

What This Apple Cider Margarita Tastes Like?

This version uses a quick ginger cinnamon cider infusion and a maple citrus salt rim, so each sip starts sharp and fresh, turns gently spiced, and finishes with a soft caramel note.

It is festive enough for guests but simple enough to make while somebody is asking where the bottle opener went!

Reposado tequila is my first choice here because its vanilla and light oak notes pair beautifully with apple cider, maple syrup, and cinnamon.

Fresh lime keeps sweetness under control, while orange liqueur gives each sip a bright citrus lift instead of letting cider make the drink taste heavy.

How to Make Apple Cider Margarita

Start with the rim because it needs a few minutes to settle properly. Stir salt, sugar, cinnamon, and orange zest together on a small shallow plate, breaking up any little clumps with your fingers.

Run a lime wedge around the outside half of each rocks glass, then rotate each glass through the mixture while pressing lightly.

I recommend coating only half of each rim, because a thick circle of salt can overpower delicate lime and apple flavors before you even reach the middle of your drink. Place glasses in the freezer while you prepare everything else.

Pour apple cider into a small saucepan and add cinnamon stick, ginger, orange peel, and clove. Set pan over medium-low heat and warm cider to 165 to 175°F, or 74 to 79°C, which should take about 3 to 4 minutes.

Hold it in that range for 8 minutes, watching for gentle steam and a slight shimmer across surface. Do not let it reach a rolling boil, because boiling can make cider taste cooked and flatten its fresh apple aroma.

Remove pan from heat, strain cider into a heatproof measuring cup, and cool it for 10 minutes at room temperature. Transfer it to the refrigerator for 15 to 20 minutes, until properly chilled.

You need 3 ounces for this recipe, so if evaporation leaves you with less, add a tablespoon or two of cold cider. You can prepare this spiced cider up to 3 days ahead and keep it refrigerated in a sealed container.

When you are ready to mix, fill a cocktail shaker about two-thirds full with ice. Add reposado tequila, lime juice, orange liqueur, chilled spiced cider, maple syrup, and aromatic bitters.

Shake firmly for 12 to 15 seconds, until shaker feels very cold and a thin frost begins to form outside.

Don’t skip this step: maple syrup is thicker than regular simple syrup, and a confident shake helps it dissolve fully instead of settling at bottom of glass. Taste a tiny amount from a straw.

If lime tastes too sharp, add 1 teaspoon maple syrup and shake again. If drink tastes too sweet, add 1 teaspoon lime juice. Make these small adjustments rather than adding a large splash of cider, which can weaken margarita flavor.

Take chilled glasses from freezer and fill each with fresh large ice cubes. Strain margarita evenly between glasses, allowing liquid to fall over ice in a clean, steady stream. Garnish each drink with a thin apple slice and cinnamon stick.

Rub apple slices with a little lime juice first if you are preparing garnishes several minutes ahead, since this slows browning and keeps them looking fresh.

Serve immediately while ice is firm and rim still has its crisp salty texture.

Serving Suggestions

  • Serve this margarita with sharp cheddar, thin apple slices, salted pepitas, smoky salsa, tortilla chips, or a small board of cured meat and pickled vegetables.
  • Salty snacks work especially well because they make maple and apple taste fuller without requiring extra sweetness in your glass.
  • For a dinner pairing, serve it alongside roasted pork tenderloin, chipotle chicken, caramelized onion flatbread, or a crisp cabbage slaw dressed with lime.
  • Keep food seasoning fairly bold, because a bland dish will make cocktail taste sharper than it really is.
  • For a small gathering, prepare spiced cider one day ahead and refrigerate it. Multiply all cocktail ingredients by four, stir them together in a pitcher, and chill without ice.
  • When guests arrive, shake two servings at a time with ice and strain into prepared glasses. This keeps each drink cold and properly diluted instead of leaving a large pitcher watery.

Pour yourself this apple cider margarita when you want bright citrus, warm spice, and a little autumn drama in one glass.

Fresh lime keeps it lively, reposado tequila gives it structure, and spiced cider brings just enough apple flavor to make every sip feel special without drowning out what makes a margarita so good!
